The town of Newtown, Connecticut, is mourning the passing of a beloved member of its community with the news of the death of Thomas Gleason. The lifelong resident of Newtown passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 16th, 2023, at the age of 86.

Thomas was born in 1937 to his parents, Paul and Elizabeth Gleason. He attended Newtown High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force. After his military service, Thomas married his wife, Joanne, and the two went on to have three children, John, David, and Jennifer.

His children remember Thomas’s dedication to his family and his hometown. He was a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and an active member of his community. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, and he was known to be generous with his time and resources. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and was known for his skills in taxidermy.

Thomas was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in Newtown and served as a deacon. He was also a member of the Newtown Lions Club, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Newtown Historical Society. He was passionate about preserving the history of Newtown and took great pride in his work with the Newtown Historical Society.

Throughout his life, Thomas was a hard worker and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He worked as an auto mechanic for many years and then worked as a carpenter until his retirement. After his retirement, he could often be seen around town, driving his beloved tractor and taking care of his gardens.

Thomas was a kind, gentle soul and will be remembered by all who knew him for his strong work ethic and dedication to his family and community. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joanne; his three children; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Thomas’s memory to the Newtown Historical Society or the Newtown Lions Club.
